The Lute is an old instrument. It has a pear shaped body and a number of courses (groups of strings). Normally each string is doubled, but sometimes the highest string is solo. Characteristic for a lute is the turned back head.
It has evolved through different stages and taken on different forms. It started in the middle ages with four to five courses and gradually developed more and more courses until there where lutes with ten courses (20 strings).
The popular lute today is the six courses renaissance lute.
